Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin fight preview: Hopefully not a repeat of Mayweather–Pacquiao drama

Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin are the two big names in boxing right now and hopefully, their much awaited tiff happens soon.

Well, world has it that the fight will happen in the latter part of 2016, with the two boxers facing separate volunteer opponents to keep themselves sharp.

But then again, everyone knows the issue right now. It is all about the dreaded catchweight limit that Alvarez is imposing, something that the World Boxing Council (WBC) is not bound to recognize.

Alvarez wants to fight at 155 pounds but Golovkin is not budging at 160 pounds, which is the natural weight for the division. If Alvarez stands firm, he will be forced to vacate the title and the mega fight will vanish just like that.

Many are, of course, hoping it doesn't come to that but are also praying it doesn't end up like another Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao situation. It took five years for the two to meet in the ring and many know how disappointing that May 2 fight was.

Alvarez is obviously hesitant to fight at 160 pounds, learning his lesson when he fought badly against Mayweather outside his comfort zone. He obviously doesn't want a repeat of that and definitely not against a knockout (KO) artist like Triple G.

The original plan called for both to fight immediately after Alvarez defeated Miguel Cotto for the WBC middleweight title.

Golovkin was the mandatory challenger but the WBC relaxed its demands a bit by allowing both to face separate foes before facing each other by the latter part of 2016.

While Alvarez reiterated he wasn't afraid of Golovkin, he also mentioned that he may need one to two years before he feels he is ready to fight at the 160 pounds catchweight, reported Fighthype.com.

The issue on this is shelved for now as both prepare to fight separate foes. Come June or July, however, expect the Alvarez vs. Golovkin pitch to take center stage once again.
