After heaps of mysteries and crimes ranging from creepy to grisly, both solved and unsolved, "Castle" season 7 is inching closer to the end of the run. It is still unknown if the series will be picked up for season 8 but nonetheless, its compelling and powerful season finale is a way to make a mark.

Just like what showrunner David Amann told TV Line not too long ago, the final episode of the series' seventh season will delve into the Castle-Beckett mythology and it will do so with "high-stakes storytelling."

The finale titled "Hollander's Woods" will bring viewers to a portion of Rick's childhood that showed the way for him to becoming a mystery writer.

"One of the areas we haven't explored is why Castle became a mystery writer," series creator Andrew Marlowe told TV Line. "Was there something that created a fascination with murder and with death and with bodies?"

The said memory, which is described as a "terrifying and defining event," is triggered when he looks into a death in the woods. The synopsis reveals that Castle becomes obsessed with the investigation as he grows more and more dogged to find answers "that have eluded him for decades."

On the other hand, what the finale means for Beckett is that it is one defining moment in her life. The detective finds herself before crossroads that forces her to make big decisions about her career. Carter Matt suggests that her storyline in the finale was devised to be open at some point as it is still unknown whether or not Stana Katic, the actress who plays Beckett in "Castle," will be back for another season.

Previous reports suggested that the series will kill Beckett off the show during the season 7 finale but Marlowe assured "that if we were to come back next year, we would be coming back with all of our pieces intact." He added that it won't be a "Grey's Anatomy situation by any means," referring to the shocking death of Patrick Dempsey's character Derek in the long-running medical drama.

Katic has not reportedly signed up for season 8 while lead actor Nathan Fillon already did. It is still unknown if she will ever want to go for another ride but there is reason to worry. Although the show might be back for a new season, Katic might not.

"If the character is complete, if there is nowhere else to go creatively, then I think it's better to stop when you're on top. [F]or me it's about art over finance," the actress told TV Line when asked about the show's fate.

The season 7 finale of "Castle" will air on May 11.
