"
Castlevania" the animated series is getting a second season, which is expected to start showing this summer on Netflix.

The animated series is based on the critically-acclaimed video game franchise of the same name by Konami. Originating as a two-dimensional side scrolling dungeon crawler, it evolved into a fully three-dimensional adventure role-playing game. It has gained a massive following throughout the years with almost every new video game title in the series. It has long held its ground as a cult classic, save for a few experimental ventures.

Comic book writer turned screenwriter Warren Ellis, the hand behind the story of the animated series, took to Twitter to announce the up and coming sequel to the widely successful first season of "Castlevania." The animated series saw wide success globally, grabbing spots in "top lists" such as GameSpot's"Best Adaptations of 2017." Season 2 will have eight episodes. No exact release date has been announced.

The story revolves around the adventures of various generations of the Belmont clan, a bloodline of vampire slayers, as they battle the forces of evil in an effort to stop the lord of darkness, Dracula. The game starts as players make their way into Dracula's castle, which appears in different parts of the world at different points in time. The castle, said to have a life of its own, is the reason for its namesake, "Castlevania."

The later titles in the video game series introduce the stories from the different points of view of the people involved in the battle against darkness, giving rise to spin-offs where players can play as Dracula's half-human son Alucard, a demon summoner anti-hero, and even a werewolf. The most recent titles tell the origin story of Dracula and the events from his point of view — fittingly titled "Castlevania: Lords of Shadow."
