Cathedral funeral service for honeymoon pair

A funeral service will be held in Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff today for a couple murdered on their honeymoon in Antigua.

Welsh newly-weds Catherine and Ben Mullany, both 31 and from Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley, were shot in their hotel bungalow on 27 July in what police believe was a bungled robbery.

The service will be led by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, and follows a private burial of the couple last month at the church where they married on 12 July. The family's local vicar Martyn Perry will also join the cathedral service.

The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson will give a reading. She became friends with the parents of the couple after meeting them by chance at JFK airport whilst on their way to Antigua.

The service also includes an opening prayer from the Archbishop. Two candles will be lit for the couple and the congregation will sing the hymn Amazing Grace.

The families of Mr Mullany, a trainee physiotherapist, and his wife, a doctor, set up a memorial fund last month that will give financial support to medical students.
