|PIC1|Following the sudden resignation of Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell, a Christian Lib Dem has emerged who is said to be "seriously considering" a push for leadership of the party.

The MP for Northavon near Bristol and also vice-President of the Liberal Democrat Christian Fellowship, Steve Webb, has expressed his interest in the position to the CEN.

He has said that he would first be seeking the advice of his close colleagues before making any official move.

In commenting on his interest in the Lib Dem hot-seat, Webb expressed his respect and praise for the standing down leader, describing him as a humble leader.

Webb, who has been MP for Northavon since 1997 when he took the seat from the Tories, said: "A lot of us thought Sir Menzies was going to tough it out, so for him to stand down for the greater good of the party shows his humility."

He added, "Had he wanted to he could have carried on but he wanted to put the party first and that shows the mark of the man."

Speaking to CEN, the Christian politician refused to rule himself out in the leadership race, saying: "It is something I'm seriously thinking about, we have a number of very good people to choose from, I haven't made a firm decision yet but I'll be talking to my colleagues before making a decision."

Webb is known for his passionate stance for debt relief for poor countries and is also active involvement with Christians in politics.
