On Friday 30th July, i-church, the first ever web-based Christian community of the Church of England will be launched. It will mark a historical moment as the most influential church in the UK starts to formally recognise cyberspace church ministries in this new era of technology.

The pioneering of i-church has taken place in the Diocese of Oxford under the pastoral care of the Bishop of Oxford. In light of declining church attendance in recent years in the Church of England, the Church has realised the urgent need to reach out to the “missing pews” or unbelievers in more diversified ways.

i-church will be committed to building an online community for those who wish to explore Christian discipleship but who are not able, or do not wish, to join a local parish church. It also aims to provide assistance to the congregation beyond usual church worships and rituals. For instance, rich information about spiritual activities will be provided on the website for the congregation’s self-exploration. i-church welcomes people of all Christian traditions, sexuality, political or geographical location to register as a member.

A Service of Dedication for i-church, will be held at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford this Friday at 7:30pm. Alyson Leslie, the first web Pastor will also be commissioned on the occasion. She has previously been a lay eucharistic minister with the Scottish Episcopal Church. Online broadcasting of the service will be available.
