The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has called on people everywhere to remember the evils of war ahead of Remembrance Day.

|TOP|The Rt. Rev. David Lacy said: “At Rememberance-tide, we go deeper than the victory commemorations of this year. We don’t think about winners and losers. We look back and remember far more.

“We look back with sorrow, remembering how evil war is, no matter what side you’re on. Human sin can lead to that. If we remember with sorrow, it will breed penitence in us,” he said.

He paid tribute to all those who gave their lives “so sadly and wastefully, but so enduringly in a way that still lives on in the lives and memories of so many”.

Rev. Lacy said: “Yes, let’s remember them with thanks, each one of them loved and treasured by someone, each one of them loved and treasured by God, and each one dying to pay the price which must inevitably be paid when the world lets evil hold sway.”

The Church of Scotland website features resources for worship leaders planning weekly services, including recommended readings and prayers for Remembrance Sunday this weekend on the 13 November.

Earlier in August this year, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland published a new Order of Service for Remembrance prepared in conjunction with The Joint Liturgical Group of Great Britain and The Royal British Legion, bringing to the service images of more recent conflicts and a greater awareness of new terrors and dangers.
