The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has praised faith organisations for the "huge and positive" contribution they make to tackling poverty in Scotland.

The Rt Rev Sheilagh Kesting was speaking ahead of a visit to Faith in Community Scotland's Journeying Onwards event to highlight poverty in the country, as part of her tour of Glasgow Presbytery.

Miss Kesting commented: "People of all faiths are striving to tackle poverty in the most deprived housing schemes, and their efforts are invaluable.

"I share the organisation's vision for a fairer, more just Scotland."

The event will be held at Anderston Kelvingrove Church on Monday at 2.30pm and will include representatives from the public sector as well as individuals from communities that have worked with Faith in Community Scotland.

In addition, members from Lochwood Church and the Muslim women's group Merge Welfare will take part in an interview to highlight their contribution and commitment to tacking poverty.

Martin Johnstone, executive director, said: "The event will be fronted by celebrity team member Atta Yaqub, who is known for his acting in films such as 'Ae Fond Kiss' as well as his contribution to Glasgow's anti-poverty agenda.

"We aim to make a difference for people of all faiths in the poorest parts of the country, and it's all about giving them a voice, and raising awareness across Scotland."

The Moderator's tour of Glasgow Presbytery began on Sunday at St Paul's Church in Provanmill, where she led morning worship.
