Classical music concerts to celebrate Pope’s anniversary

Riccardo Muti is to conduct a concert in the Vatican for Pope Benedict XVI in celebration of the seventh anniversary of his election to the pontificate.

Pope Benedict is an avid classical music fan and plays the piano.

Rome’s Teatro dell’Opera will perform selections from Vivaldi and Verdi in the concert conducted by Muti on Friday.

Muti is the current music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

La Scala opera house announced last week that Daniel Barenboim is to conduct Beethoven’s Ninth symphony in another concert for the Pope when he visits Milan on 1 June.
