J.R. Smith is one of the players whom the Cleveland Cavaliers would want to bring back but complications arose when the swingman opted out of his contract with the Cavs after the past season.

Apparently, his paycheck is something that is hindering him from signing with other ball clubs, seeing his history and both on and off court antics as basis for consideration.

Of course, like most players, Smith would be looking for good pay for his services but it seems that his intent has been backfiring as of late. There were talks that the Lakers were considering him but all that is academic now with Lou Williams, Nick Young, and the returning Kobe Bryant filling up the spots he could fit into.

Hence, it all boils down to one team — the Cleveland Cavaliers. And now, Smith doesn't have that luxury of getting a paycheck. Had he opted in, he would have been guaranteed about $6 million for the coming season.

With his status, he may have to lower his expectations a bit and probably settle for a one year deal. Either that or he could take his act elsewhere. The worst scenario, of course, would be to see him retire.

It remains to be seen when Smith and the Cavs would sit down to talk about his contract. From the Cavs squad last season, only he and Tristan Thompson have remained unsigned. It will also be interesting if the Cavs will stand pat on their decision to bring him back, although the cards seem to have changed with the 2015–16 NBA season fast approaching.

The funny thing is that Smith did mention before that he wanted to return with the Cavs. And from the looks of it, he wanted to hit two birds with one stone — salary and championship.

Sadly, that doesn't seem to be happening with no team taking him in and the Cavs waiting if he would be still available nearing the season. He will likely be the last pawn after the Cavs come to terms with Tristan Thompson.
