Cleveland Cavaliers trade rumors 2016: Deron Williams is team's latest target

The Cleveland Cavaliers may not be luring the majority of the attention in the league right now, but people should understand that they still are the reigning National Basketball Association champions who faced an uphill and improbable climb to defeat the Golden State Warriors. But if there is one very good reason why most people don't hail them as favorites to win the title this year, it would be the fact that the team does not have a reliable backup point guard, at least for now.

The departure of Australian defensive-minded point guard Matthew Dellavedova and the retirement of veteran Mo Williams suddenly placed the Cavs in a tight spot heading into the season. At this very instant, the only backup to Kyrie Irving is prolific rookie Kay Felder, who might have impressed everyone in the preseason but still looks very inexperienced and unready for the pressure of the playoffs.

In order to address this looming problem, Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon revealed that team general manager David Griffin wants to trade for a backup before the deadline in February 2017 comes. And quite interestingly, one of the names Vardon mentioned is Dallas Mavericks starting point guard Deron Williams.

Unlike the Cavaliers, the Mavericks are struggling big time this season, although it's still too early to predict they won't make it to the playoffs. To recall, Williams wanted out of Brooklyn because he didn't want to play for a team that didn't have championship aspirations. But when he arrived in Dallas, the team had not been that successful either and quite frankly, the team is no different than the Nets at this point in the season.

So if ever the Cleveland front office finds a way to give Dallas what it wants in order to give up Williams, the veteran point guard's entry to the reigning champs will surely boost their chances of retaining the title this season.
