Comcast has introduced a new streaming service for Xfinity Internet subscribers and it will arrive by the end of summer.

The media company said on Sunday that the new service, called Stream, is an Internet TV service that offers HBO and other major broadcast networks for $15 a month without the need to subscribe to a separate cable TV service, as reported in SFGate.

The service will be available first in Boston, and then in Chicago and Seattle. However, there are also plans that the service will be offered in all Comcast areas early next year, as announced by Matt Strauss, the company's executive vice president and general manager of video services, in a blog post.

Since it's in beta mode as announced, there are several drawbacks on the upcoming service, including being limited to tablets and smartphones only as of the moment.

This means that those who want to watch shows on a big screen should not consider Stream.

"If you love TV and spend most of your time with the screen on your lap as opposed to the one on the wall, Stream may just be the thing for you," Strauss said in his post.

Subscribers of big cable bundles should also not find Stream as a replacement, according to CNN Money, because the service will not offer as many big cable channels, other than HBO.

While Comcast said that their new TV service will offer thousands of shows and movies that are on-demand, it still cannot compare to the likes of Netflix and Amazon.

Despite the fact that the service will be in beta test mode, it's still a big deal since it offers a more convenient way to subscribe to TV and the fact that it comes from the biggest broadband service provider in the United States.

Strauss' post said that subscribing to Stream would be easy that an interested subscriber need not make a call or set up an appointment with a technician.

Xfinity Internet subscribers can simply download the Stream app and start enjoying the service.
