Conor McGregor is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) as of late and while many big names are lined up to face "The Notorious" there is someone rising among the mixed martial arts (MMA) ranks who could possibly one day be among them.

To date, Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo are perhaps the leading names that McGregor could face in the featherweight division, but what about an old foe named Joseph "Joe" Duffy in the lightweight division?

As reported back in October, Duffy was one of the few known fighters to hand McGregor a defeat. That took place in 2010 during Cage Warriors 39 wherein Duffy needed only 38 seconds to submit McGregor.

Fast forward to today, everyone knows that the odds have changed — including Duffy. McGregor is without question a different fighter and may be someone who can even the score with Duffy if the Irishman and the UFC would allow it.

There are, however, complications. One is that McGregor is tied up with the featherweight and possibly lightweight division, which could mean a lot of opponents are lined up for the Irishman.

Duffy, on the other hand, needed to take care of business as well and that was against Dustin Poirier, which took place last night. Duffy was dominated by Poirer in the said match. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen where the Donegal native is headed.

Possibly in the future the two could meet up, depending on the angle and the situation McGregor is in. But seeing the long list of fighters who have established their names in the division, however, that may take some time.

But, of course, an impressive showing against Poirier could change all that and there is already a twist with the 2010 win by Duffy. McGregor is likely to respond after Duffy's match against Poirier which could eventually spark the fireworks a long-awaited rematch would need.

For those who missed it, here is the video of that 2010 clash at Cage Warriors 39.
