Greg Serrano (Santino Fontana) had to say goodbye to Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) to pursue his dreams in the previous episode of "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" season 2.

In the episode titled "When Will Josh and His Friend Leave Me Alone?" Greg finally told Rebecca that he loves her. But he also had to leave her in West Covina because he will begin his new life as a student at Georgia's Emory University.

While fans of the series did not see Greg's sudden departure coming, Fontana revealed in an interview with Vulture that his stint in the series is really meant for just a year.

"The CW was kind enough to give me a one-year contract because of what I thought would be best for my family and my life [in New York]," the actor said in the interview. "I never, ever in a million years thought they would let me do that," he went on to say.

Fontana also explained that they had no idea that the series will be picked up for season 2 after its first season, which is why he already committed to other projects outside the show that he simply could not back out from. But the major factor for his decision to say goodbye to the show is mainly his family.

On the other hand, series co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna also mentioned in the same interview that the end of Fontana's contract fit together with their plans for the show. According to McKenna, she and Bloom actually knew that the love triangle between Rebecca, Greg, and Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez II) will end in season 2.

McKenna also mentioned that while they know how much the fans love Greg, his departure is a very vital part of the story. "It's a very fanciful, silly show and it does have a lot of fantasy in it but we really try to make it grounded. For him, this made the most sense and it allows for the show to evolve," the series co-creator added.

The next episode of "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" season 2 will be aired on The CW on Friday, Nov. 18.
