It was back in the 2009–10 season when Deron Williams and Wes Matthews starred for the Utah Jazz. That season, Matthews was an undrafted rookie but still proved his worth as he and Williams partnered to help the Jazz end up that season with a 53-win record.

The Jazz went as far as the second round that year, but eventually bowed to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The year after that, Matthews went on to play for the Portland Trailblazers where he blossomed into one of the NBA's finest three-point shooters before that torn left Achilles tendon hampered his run.

Williams, on the other hand, will have the chance to redeem himself after experiencing a big dip in performance. He was far from the Williams many saw in Utah; but now, he has a chance to redeem himself with the Mavericks.

For the Mavs, a lot hinges on the dynamic duo heading into the next season. After a tumultuous off season that starred DeAndre Jordan, the Mavs hope that the backcourt overhaul will make up for the lean frontline that the Mavs will have to make do this coming season.

Looking back at the previous seasons and stints of Williams and Matthews, it will be a huge gamble, so a bit of pressure on the new recruits is to be expected.

There is also the need to determine if both can sync in with head coach Rick Carlisle. The Mavs may not be among the favorites in the Western Conference this coming season but are not totally out of it.

With the right approach and tweaks, the Mavericks could still pull off some surprises for the coming season.

Aside from Matthews and Williams, the Mavericks still have Dirk Nowitzki and a couple of new faces. Chandler Parson's performance would depend on his health, while it remains to be seen if Samuel Dalembert will rebound as well.
