It's about to get darker in "Darkest Dungeon," as a new downloadable content (DLC) has been announced for the Lovecraftian horror roleplaying game (RPG).

The latest DLC, titled "The Color of Madness," has been revealed by developer and publisher Red Hook Studios and will feature cosmic horrors as the newest addition to the maddening monstrosities of the game. "The Color of Madness" introduces aliens as the highlight of the DLC, where players will have to face the unknown using a ragtag team of fragile mercenaries to discover riches and treasures unlike any the players have faced in the base game.

In "The Color of Madness," an alien shard crash-lands on the Old Miller's farm just outside the in-game Hamlet. This has a devastating effect not only on the landscape but also on the witnesses who lose their sense of sight. "Those unfortunate enough to witness the Comet's arrival have been blinded by what they can only describe as a shifting, ephemeral hue of damnably abrasive intensity. There has been no word from the farm in a fortnight, save for the unearthly groaning that echoes from the ruin of the mill," as worded by Red Hook on its official blog.

With the new DLC comes new content for the turn-based RPG as well. Included is a new unnamed quest type which pits the players' team of adventurers against unending waves of enemies as they get lost in time and space. These enemies will either be old or new ones and will test the player's skills and tactics in the face of overwhelming horror. Afterward, they'll be able to compare their scores against other layers.

There will also be a new faction of enemies which the players must confront. These come in the form of the mad survivors of the Old Miller's farm who have succumbed to the blinding light of the Comet and now work to spread insanity. Lastly, new trinkets are also expected and can be obtained in-game or purchased from Nomad Wagon, while special ones are included and can be bought using Comet Shards, which the players can obtain from expeditions to the crash site.

No exact release has been announced yet, but the developers have projected the DLC to arrive sometime during the spring of 2018.
