Deadly hit-and-run day care crash kills one; Police on the hunt for driver Robert Corchado
Police are on the hunt for a Florida felon, wanted for a deadly hit-and-run car crash that took place at a day care center on Wednesday.
During yesterday's incident, police say Robert Corchado, who is in his late 20s, was driving when he struck another car that jumped a curb. That vehicle smashed into a day care building near Orlando, killing one girl and injuring 15.
Another child is reported to be in critical condition, while three others are in serious condition. A total of 13 people were brought in to local hospitals due to the accident.
The deadly accident was caused by a Toyota Solara convertible that went out of control after Corchado allegedly struck the vehicle with the Dodge Durango he was driving. The convertible broke through the day care's wall and came to a halt inside of the building.
Robert Corchado, last arrested in December, was previously on a misdemeanor charge for leaving the scene of a previous crash. He also faced felony charges for selling narcotics for the possessing marijuana. He was released on more than $10,000 bond and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
61-year-old Albert Dean Campbell, who was identified as the convertible driver, was not injured. Although the Durango left the scene, it was located about two hours later after being abandoned at a home in Winter Park.
Authorities in the Winter Park/Orlando region are on high alert for Corchado, who has been arrested eight times in the past 14 years.
Highway Patrol announced on Thursday that they are looking for a white or black Mazda they believe Corchado may have rented from an Enterprise Rent-A-Car located in Winter Park.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott reached out to the families of the victims hurt in the crash. He released a statement on Wednesday.
"As a grandfather of three young children, I can't imagine losing such a precious life at such a young age," the governor said. "Today's hit-and-run was an act of cowardice, and members of the Florida Highway Patrol are working closely with local law enforcement to bring those who caused this crash to justice."
