"Descendants of the Sun" has become one of the most popular television series coming from South Korea and there has been much speculation on whether a second season will push forward. A report from Game N Guide reveals that season 2 is indeed in the works but it will be a very different show than the first season.

According to the report, the two main leads of season 1, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, are not reprising their roles for season 2 due to scheduling conflicts. It is further pointed out that their story had reached a conclusion by the end of season 1 and there would be little to no point in pushing forward in keeping them for season 2.

With the two main leads not returning, the report states that it is possible Jin Goo and Kim Ji-won will be the new main characters, reprising their roles as Master Sergeant Seo Dae-young and First Lieutenant Yoon Myeong-ju respectively. Jin Goo has also stated that if a second season pushed through he would gladly return if the studios wanted him back.

Kim Won-seok, writer for season 1, is also not returning and the duty may fall to his co-writer Kim Eun-sook. According to the report there are rumors that season 2 would adapt some of the story elements from the "Criminal Minds" series as this would better fit the new lead characters instead of going forward with another romance story.

Season 1 ended with an event taking place in Canada and the main cast of characters were teased to head there for their next mission. It is possible that season 2 will take place after this mission in order to explain the absence of Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki as well as establish a new story for Jin Goo and Kim-Ji-won's characters.

No official premiere date for the second season has been announced although it is speculated to release sometime in 2017.
