'Despicable Me 3' release date, plot rumors: Steve Carell to voice twins Gru and Dru; film could be a top grosser
Fans of Gru, the three little girls, and the minions are in for an awesome treat next year as production is underway for the third installment of "Despicable Me." Those who know the movie immediately went wild after news of a third movie spread like wildfire.
Cinema Blend reported months ago that the latest installment of the franchise is set to revolve around Gru and his previously unknown twin brother, Dru. Illumination Entertainment executive Chris Meledandri said that both characters will be brought to life by Steve Carell's voice and will be so identical that the only difference will be the hair and the wardrobe.
More importantly, a new villain is set to be introduced by the name of Balthazar Bratt, voiced by "South Park's" Trey Parker. His character is described as a former '80s child star who was later on shunned by the audience. He wishes to take revenge on the world, but Gru and Dru will intervene after setting aside their differences.
Some of the familiar faces from previous films will also be gracing the animated movie. Kristen Wiig reprises her role as Lucy Wilde, Gru's crime-busting partner-turned-wife. Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Nev Scharrel are, of course, coming back as Margo, Edith, and Agnes. The lovable minions Kevin, Bob, and Stuart will be voiced by Pierre Coffin, Movie Pilot has learned.
"Despicable Me 3" could potentially be Illumination Entertainment's shining gem once it hits the theaters. The series' performance has been outstanding and consistently netting higher revenue one film after the other, with the spinoff "Minions" earning almost $1.2 million in the worldwide box office, as per The Numbers. With its popularity, it won't come as a surprise if "Despicable Me 3" could hit a lot higher than "Minions."
"Despicable Me 3" is set to hit the big screen by June 30, 2017.
