"Destiny" is currently scheduled to receive one last DLC expansion before the end of the year, titled "Rise of Iron." However, following the DLC's launch it is expected that developer Bungie will be focusing their resources entirely on "Destiny 2," which is now rumored to be released by September 2017.

The sequel was initially rumored to launch by this year but a shift in the positions and responsibilities at Bungie, particularly with "The Taken King" DLC director now taking over for the franchise, the game has been delayed by one more year to late 2017 although Bungie has yet to confirm when the game is exactly going to launch.

According to a report from PC Advisor, it is more than likely that "Destiny 2" will release by September next year given that the first "Destiny" launched back in September 2014. Video game companies are known for following specific release date patterns and Bungie is likely to follow the pattern of the first game's release window.

"Destiny 2," at least upon release, will not be the full package as the developers are expected to release additional DLC packs and expansions over the years until they begin work on "Destiny 3" or a brand new IP. 

There are no confirmations coming from Bungie if "Destiny 2" will be released for multiple platforms and for the PC or if it will take advantage of the Xbox Play Anywhere system that Microsoft has recently been advocating to its consumers, allowing them to play and transfer save files from the Xbox One to the PC and vice versa.

A report from Ecumenical News also points out that there is no guarantee that "Destiny 2" will release for older consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360. Even if it does the report explains that future DLC packs and expansions may be exclusive for the newer consoles given that they have the power to run the features the developers want to implement into the game.
