'Destiny 2' tips: Guide on improving PC performance and graphics

A few days before its launch, "Destiny 2" is now being bundled with any purchase of NVIDIA GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti video cards, and rightly so, as the game will have taxing system requirements, particularly for higher resolutions.

In line with that, NVIDIA itself has released a full graphics guide for "Destiny 2" and explains what each and every graphical setting is for.

Those who are already familiar with it can then proceed to other graphics guide recommendation for the upcoming PC version, especially if they are going to be playing "Destiny 2" on the anything less than the recommended system requirements. These standards include the following: Intel i5-2400 3.4 gigahertz (GHz), i5-7400 3.5 GHz, or AMD Ryzen R5 1600X 3.6 GHz processors; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 gigabytes of video random access memory (VRAM) for the graphics processing unit (GPU) or video card; and 8 GB of RAM.

Those are the recommended settings for the 1920 x 1080-pixel (1080p) resolution only. If "Destiny 2" is to be played at 1440p, players will need an NVIDIA GTX 1070, while 4K resolution will need the flagship GTX 1080 for smooth gameplay.

Segment Next also recommends tweaking a few of the settings based on the graphics processing unit (GPU) used by the player. For anti-aliasing (AA), using subpixel morphological AA (SMAA) instead of fast approximate AA (FXAA) should help those without the recommended hardware, as it does not cost much in terms of frame rate. Character Detail, on the other hand, has little to no impact on performance and should be kept at max.

Depth of Field can cost as much as seven frames per second (FPS) when turned on, so disabling it is recommended for weaker hardware. Field of View can also cost as much as 11 FPS and should be dialed down on any device with less than a GTX 1060. Foliage Detail Distance is also a costly setting and should be kept at a minimum without the GTX 1060. Lastly, Shadow Quality is one of the costliest settings in "Destiny 2" and perhaps any other game, so setting it below the maximum quality is advised for people with below-recommended specs.

Following these configurations can yield a smoother gameplay experience, especially for players with old hardware. "Destiny 2" is set to be released for the PC on Oct. 24.
