'Destiny' freebies: Bungie gives away gifts to users for 2016

Destiny: The Taken KingBungie

Players of the first-person shooting game "Destiny" will be happy to know that Bungie is giving away in-house freebies to gamers come this January 7th.

In an official website blog post from the company behind "Destiny," it was announced that players will each be getting 15 Strange Coins and 15 Motes of Light. "When we all return from a long winter's nap, we'll still be in the giving mood," Bungie said in the blog post. "Just because you're all awesome, we'll be stuffing your stockings with 15 Strange Coins and 15 Motes of Light."

The new year's treats from the game developer are a form of online currency that can be used in "Destiny's" online store called the Tower. In addition to the free currency, Bungie also promises to give out an exclusive Emblem that will be revealed only upon release. However, this gift has a catch as users are asked to check into the game in between Jan. 7 and 10.

The blog post served as Bungie's year-end update for 2015, also giving an announcement on the winners for "Sparrow Racing League Film Festival," a video making competition for players on "Sparrow Racing."

"Destiny" is placed in the setting of a mythic science-fiction world where players take on the roles of warriors called Guardians, who defend Earth's remaining city from a legion of various alien species.

The game has received mixed reviews, but mostly good ones, being esteemed as part of a list of top ten games of 2015 by Games Radar. The latest expansion "The Taken King" has been rated on Metacritic with a score of 86 based on 81 critic scores.

"Destiny" was released back in Sept. 9, 2014. Bungie, also known as the genius behind the hit game "Halo," released "Destiny" in partnership with Activision, which has taken responsibility of publishing the game for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One consoles.
