There have been talks about who will play Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel movie "Doctor Strange." Several names were said to have been considered, but the top two are Joaquin Phoenix and Benedict Cumberbatch.

At first, it looked like Marvel was going for Phoenix on this one. But according to Deadline, the talks with Phoenix went south and that was when Marvel went back to its list of names.  Among those said to have been considered for the role are Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Keanu Reeves and Justin Theroux.

Cumberbatch has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to play Doctor Strange. Deadline reports that Marvel has made their choice and negotiations have begun.

Fortunately, Phoenix dropped out of the role and Marvel immediately went with Cumberbatch, now that his schedule can allow him to shoot the film, which has been a problem considering how in demand the actor is. Since Marvel won't be making "Strange" soon, he would be able to make time for the Marvel movie.

Cumberbatch is better known for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC/PBC hitshow "Sherlock" where he plays alongside Martin Freeman who plays Dr. Watson. His new film "The Imitation Game," to be released on Nov. 21, is in the running for the Oscars, including a Best Actor nomination.

The wide fanbase of Cumberbatch from "Sherlock" sure is delighted to hear about the news. Doctor Strange looks like a coveted role which can launch the actor's career to even greater heights. However, there are many Marvel fans who believe that he isn't the perfect choice to play Doctor Strange.

"Strange" is a story about a former neurosurgeon who becomes the Sorcerer Supreme. He is the ultimate protector of Earth against "magical and mystical threats," described THR. This will mark the first appearance of Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created Doctor Strange. Scott Derrickson will direct the film.
