Rumors about Matt Smith's return to "Doctor Who" have been going around online, as talks about Peter Capaldi's possible exit as the 12^th Doctor intensifies before season 10 starts airing on BBC.

Mirror UK reported that Capaldi was rumored to say goodbye to the iconic role after the release of the upcoming season in 2017. But showrunner Steven Moffat hinted that the 11^th Doctor could possibly reprise his role as the Time Lord in the future installment of the popular British sci-fi series.

According to the showrunner, Smith has always been vocal about his intention to go back to the series after leaving the show at the end of season 7. Moffat said that Smith was "quite open about how much he misses it, and how much he wishes he hadn't left."

Smith went on to join other projects after his stint in the long-running fantasy sci-fi drama. He was a part of the 2015 film "Terminator Genisys" and 2016's "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." He will also appear as Philip Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh, in the upcoming Netflix Original series titled "The Crown" later this year.

Moffat also revealed that Smith had a hard time saying goodbye to the show when he had to leave in 2013.

"Matt, who was a friend and ally, was leaving. I couldn't get him to stay. It felt like everything was blowing up around me," the showrunner said.

If Smith will return to the show after Capaldi's departure, he will be the first Time Lord in history to resurrect himself. But BBC and his camp have yet to confirm if the rumors are true.

At the moment, the production for the 10^th season of "Doctor Who" is in full swing. The official Instagram page of the show recently uploaded a photo of Capaldi in his new Time Lord attire while signing autographs for the fans.
