Doctor Who season 11 with Jodie Whittaker may be followed by a Christmas special

Jodie Whittaker is the new Doctor(BBC)

Doctor Who fans are counting down the weeks until Doctor Who season 11 starts with a brand new Doctor.

Jodie Whittaker made her debut as the Thirteenth Doctor back during the Christmas special in 2017, which was also the swansong for the previous Doctor, Peter Capaldi.

Understandably, the BBC has been doing everything in its power to stop leaks of the new season from getting out and circulating on the internet before season 11 premieres.

There were rumors of footages circulating last week, which the BBC quickly moved to put a stop to. According to the Daily Mail, the BBC has gone to court in California against the Tapatalk online forum in the hopes of identifying who leaked the footage and putting a stop to further leaks.

In addition to Jodie Whittaker as the new doctor, there are some new faces in the cast too, like Alan Cumming who according to CinemaBlend will play King James I. Cumming's already shared some scoops on his character in the Homo Sapiens podcast where he described his character as a 'dandy, foppy sort of coward' who turns good in the end. CinemaBlend even speculates that Cumming may eventually play the Doctor somewhere down the line but that's a long way off as the Jodie Whittaker season hasn't even aired yet so who knows what will happen.  Fans seem thrilled to have their first female Doctor next season so we can expect to see her for a few years yet.

Doctor Who season 11 is airing on BBC America in the fall but an exact premiere date has not yet been announced. The next season will be 10 episodes, which is shorter than the past seasons, but the air time is being extended from 45 minutes to 50 minutes each.

DigitalSpy said it was possible the season will be a forerunner to a Christmas special as the 10-week season kicking off in the fall would be ending around the perfect time for that to follow on nicely.

And it would be carrying on a tradition of airing a Doctor Who Christmas special that's been ongoing since 2005.

But then, the show is no longer under Steven Moffat as it's now Chris Chibnall at the helm and it was previously reported he wasn't interested in doing a Christmas special - at least initially. So who knows if he's warmed around to it by now.  We may hear more on that front at the San Diego Comic Con running from July 19 to July 22.
