'Doom' for Nintendo Switch now available; gory trailer shows intense gameplay
Gamers everywhere were surprised when it was announced during Nintendo's Direct in September that "Doom," the heavily brutal, fast-paced, first-shooter video game would be coming to the Switch. Completely unexpected, it was announced alongside "Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus" for the Switch, and was released worldwide on Nov. 10.
To further up the hype, game publisher Bethesda Softworks released an exclusive "Doom" trailer for the Nintendo Switch, revealing what it is like to play the past-faced game on the portable console. The trailer is short but completely shows the kind of gameplay everyone should expect from "Doom" when played on the Switch. It features both handheld and docked mode.
"Doom" was initially released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in early May last year. It is the fourth title of the game and is a complete reboot of the whole franchise. To make the game possible for a Switch version, game developer id Software teamed up with Panic Button.
Based on the trailer, it looks like the Switch version of "Doom" is on a whole other level compared to the other gaming platforms. Aside from the game's unique handheld and docked mode – which features the Switch's exclusive JoyCon controls, the entire gameplay was tweaked just enough for the console to perfectly accommodate the game.
"Doom" for Switch also features an arcade mode similar to the other ports, but the online multiplayer mode must be downloaded separately due to the console's limited storage capacity. However, it is important to note that the additional files for the games are already included in the initial cost.
According to Comicbook, "Developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre and created multiplayer Deathmatch, DOOM returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience. Relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fast, fluid movement provide the foundation for intense, first-person combat – whether you're obliterating demon hordes through the depths of Hell in the single-player campaign, or competing against your friends in numerous multiplayer modes."
"Doom" is now available for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
