'Doom' news: multiplayer alpha set to begin soon

One of the biggest surprises that Bethesda announced in this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo was the reboot of one of the most-loved game classics, "Doom." This time though, instead of the straight-up first-person shooter of the old title, the new "Doom" will incorporate a full multiplayer mode and content creation tool called SnapMap. 

Although the new "Doom" will indeed have new features and much-improved gameplay and design, the title will still hold on to the classic original's style.

Writing on the newly-opened Bethesda.net site, Gary Steinman, global content lead for Bethesda Softworks said, "The game is built around 'push-forward' combat: fast and relentless; no standing around and no cowering behind cover."  

Steinman also stated that the general gameplay will not differ from that of the original.

He said, "You are a lone 'Doom' marine on Mars with one objective: to destroy demons from hell, using (among other weapons) fan-favorite demon-destroyers like the Super Shotgun, the chainsaw and, of course, the BFG. Finish demons with brutal kill moves, which not only deliver an intensely gory demise to your foes but also reward you with extra health and ammo." 

To make sure that the new features will come out without a hitch, Bethesda has also announced that the new "Doom" will have a multiplayer alpha set to be launched soon. However, since the test phase can only accommodate a set number of players, not all will be able to participate in the alpha launch. Bethesda will be selecting from the number of players who placed pre-orders to the id Software-developed "Wolfenstein: The New Order" title. 

Those who have pre-ordered the recent "Wolfenstein" release can log on to the official alpha site to redeem their access codes.

The new "Doom" is slated to roll out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in spring of next year.
