'Downton Abbey' season 6 finale spoilers, plot rumors: Show ends on low-key note

"Downton Abbey" season 6 is officially ending, with the finale episode airing this coming weekend. As pointed out in a report from Cartermatt, there will be a few key scenes to end the series but not everyone is getting a final resolution.

PBS/ITV

Back in September, actor Jim Carter told Telegraph that the series would end on a low-key note instead of the explosive, climactic closing that a majority of other television shows utilize. As stated by Cartermatt, this will prove true as some of the remaining characters will not get a complete ending.

Instead, these characters will be left with a positive cliffhanger. The report points out that Thomas (Rob James-Collier) will be left with a hopeful future, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) and Violet (Maggie Smith) will reach some sort of agreement and Baron Merton (Douglas Reith) will be left with a depressing diagnosis that will leave his future undetermined and blurry.

It is also important to note that while the episode is set to air this weekend on PBS, it originally aired in the U.K. last Christmas, which puts into context some of the events that unfold in the episode. For this reason some of the crucial key plot points have already leaked online.

In regards to Carson (Jim Carter), the old butler will suffer from Parksinson's disease. During the finale, the butler will realize that this ailment will affect his ability to perform his duties and he will be forced to retire. However, before the episode is over, he and Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) will allow Thomas to return to take over Carson's duty.

Carson will, however, be allowed to remain as a retired member of the staff and will receive regular pension. He will still occassionally work, serving as an oversight and advisor to Thomas and the rest of the house staff.

"Downton Abbey" season 6 episode 9 will air this March 6.
