The Dragon Ball franchise is one of the most iconic mangas and animated series of all time. Although mangas and their animated series already dominated the Japanese and Asian scene, it was Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series that opened a whole new market in western countries when it was picked up by Viz Media for release in North America. The western exposure gave the Japanese mangas and animated series, both existing and new ones, a whole new level of popularity and following. These include Togashi's Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho, Oda's One Piece, Kishimoto's Naruto, Tomino's Mobile Suit: Gundam, Fujio's Doraemon, Tezuka's Black Jack and Astro Boy.

Dragon Ball Super, a new installment for the animated series, is set to come out July 5. Two teaser trailers were released as part of the promotion for the animated adaptation. However, the manga for the series, as with most animes in Japan, is already out. This one, however, is not written by Toriyama but by Toyotarou, an artist who used to work under the pen name Toyble and was hired by Shuiesha Inc.in 2012 to do a manga adaption of the 2015 Dragon Ball Z anime film, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', entitled Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' - Special One Shot.

In the manga, Dragon Ball Super is set after the Z-warriors, and Mr. Satan defeated Majin Buu. The first chapter, aptly titled "The God of Destruction's Prophetic Dream", started off with a hardworking Goku driving a tractor while his son, Goten, delivers lunch. After lunch, he mentally manifests a fight with Freeza, Cell and Buu, which was put to a halt when Goten almost wrecked the tractor. Goku stopped training to save his son and the farm equipment. During a short conversation with Goten, Goku manifested his longing for proper training and a desire to return to North Kaiou's place, but he is prevented from doing so by Chi-chi's demand for him to provide for the family. Mr. Satan then appeared and offered Goku a hundred million zenny as part of the prize he got for saving the world. Hesitantly, the Saiyan accepted the money so he can persuade Chi-chi to allow him to train and not bother him with work.

Across the universe, in a certain planet, The God of Destruction, Beerus, is shown enjoying a meal. The God revealed to his servants that he knew about the poison, which was in the food. After the chaos that ensued, Beerus blew up the planet and stood in the rubble while talking to Whis about his dream pertaining to a "him".
