EA acquires Respawn Entertainment and Titanfall's intellectual property rights
On Nov. 9, video game company Electronic Arts (EA) acquired Respawn Entertainment, and alongside it, Titanfall's intellectual property right.
EA and Respawn have had a long history together, with EA publishing Respawn's games in the past. According to a letter posted by Respawn's CEO Vince Zampella "While it wasn't necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense. With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn't interfere with our process of making games or studio culture. EA will provide us with more resources, access to new technologies, and expertise that we can tap into to that will help us make better games, and Respawn will retain the same creative freedom and culture we've always had. We've been talking closely with the leadership at EA and we share their values and vision for the future of being a developer-focused company that puts the players first."
Teaming up with EA made sense to them, and aside from that, it also had a shared interest. EA had helped with games before and would now proceed to help them with the new "Titanfall" game as well.
Vince Zampella went on to say that games that were in progress would continue, as usual, aside from that, no major changes would be made to how things were run and no major layoffs would happen. At the end of the day, it seems like the decision wouldn't affect anyone too negatively and was for the greater good.
While there are no release dates yet, a brand new "Titanfall" game will be coming sometime in the future, and that's not the only surprise. According to game news website Polygon, a currently untitled game that is set in the "Star Wars" universe is also in the works alongside a new first-person virtual reality (VR) combat game.
EA and Respawn will be working together to see these games lift off and hit PC and console screens sometime in the future and fans are excited to see what awesome things their combined effort will lead to.
