After being noticeably absent in the series renewal announcement in March, "Elementary" finally got a season 6 renewal from CBS.

TVLine reveals that the network officially ordered the renewal of the Sherlock Holmes-inspired procedural series for a sixth season. However, the show's upcoming installment might not air this coming fall.

According to Variety, the series might make its comeback during the midseason that will begin airing in 2018. However, the report does not mention the reason why CBS is considering this move for its 100 percent-owned series.

The series features Jonny Lee Miller's character Sherlock Holmes, who is known for investigating crimes with partner, Lucy Liu's character Joan Watson. They are joined by other main cast members, including Jon Michael Hill's character Marcus Bell and Aidan Quinn's Captain Gregson of NYPD.

The plot of the upcoming installment of "Elementary" has yet to be revealed by the network in the coming days.

Meanwhile, other reports mention that "Elementary" experienced steady ratings decline during the show's first two seasons. It is also considered as one of the lowest-rating scripted series in the network, which made its season renewal unpredictable. However, its steady performance in the international market became a key factor in the show's renewal for its sixth season.

Meanwhile, the season 5 finale of "Elementary" will center on Holmes and Watson's search for a shady criminal after a gang war began in New York City. According to the synopsis, the New York City Police Department will try to stop the citywide violence, while the duo centers their investigation on a murder they believe could have a strong link to the cause why the conflict began in the city.

The season finale of "Elementary" season 5 will be aired by CBS on Sunday, May 21, at 10 p.m. EDT.
