'Empire' season 2 spoilers, premiere: Series to return in September

The Lyon family's drama never ends in Fox's Empire.Empire Facebook page

Fans have been aching to see more of Lucius Lyon and his family's exploits in "Empire" season 2. The cult of fans now has a date to mark on their calendars for the return of the mega successful musical drama, which scooped up increasing viewership as more and more episodes aired.

The show's second run will begin on Sept. 23 and the announcement initially came from Taraji P. Henson, who plays Lucius' former wife Cookie. The actress revealed the premiere date when she replied to a Twitter user who asked when Cookie and the music-loving family unit will return.

It did not take long before the official Twitter handle for "Empire" writers followed up and made things official. When the show returns in September, fans will be treated to not only 12 but 18 new episodes packed with drama, great music and A-list guest stars.

Many big names in the music industry have been dropped and touted to make an appearance in the popular FOX series. Among the confirmed ones are Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, and Lenny Kravitz. But series co-producer Brian Grazer revealed that more stars are coming.

"Eminem, I know, loves our show," Grazer told Good Morning America. "And I produced '8 Mile.' I'm going to beg him to get on our show — he and Oprah Winfrey. Somehow I'm going to get one or both of them on our show."

Show creator Lee Daniels added that the roles are ready for Winfrey and Oscar-winner Common to take. Meanwhile, Timbaland is now joined by Ne-Yo in writing music for "Empire" season 2. It is still unknown if the "Coming With You" singer will appear in the show as well.

When "Empire" started, 9.9 million tuned in to it. By the time its season finale aired, there were 17.6 million viewers raring to see how it ends for Lucius, his company, and his family. The premiere of "Empire" season 2 on Sept. 23 should have a crowd of excited fans waiting.
