'Extant' season 3 renewed or cancelled? what to expect

The fate of science fiction drama "Extant" is still up in the air. The show ended its second season last month, but there's still no announcement from CBS about renewing the series, which stars Academy Award-winner Halle Berry as astronaut Molly Watts, for a third season.

There are speculations that the show's inadvertent diversion from its original premise may have cost the series its chance for a renewal. According to reports, this had fans boycotting the show who came for the space drama.

VC Post says that the salary requirement of its lead stars, A-listers Berry and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who just got on board the series in the sophomore season, and their failure to equate it with good ratings and viewership may have also led CBS to axe the series.

However, fans who hope that "Extant" season 3 can still happen hold on to the fact that the finale of the second season ended with a cliffhanger. This, of course, doesn't assure renewal as there are series that were still cancelled despite opting to end with a question rather than resolution.

Just recently, CBS chose to cut "Under the Dome" short, which fans and even the people behind it did not see coming. The series and "Extant" reportedly rake in the lowest viewership and ratings for the network. This might mean Molly Watts's time could be up.

But if "Extant" season 3 could still happen, it is likely that it will be the show's last. This will allow it to tie all loose ends and provide answers to the questions they left hanging in season 2.

Despite all this, there are still some critics who think that CBS will give "Extant" another shot if they were to base it on how much better the second was than its predecessor. But no matter what the network has up its sleeve, it is hoped that CBS ends the agonizing wait of fans with good news.
