'Extant' season 3 renewed? No word of renewal or cancellation from CBS

CBS has to announce the renewal or cancellation of "Extant."CBS

The sophomore run of the science fiction series "Extant" just came to a close and fans are wondering whether they will see the continuation of the story of Molly (Halle Berry), the hybrids, and the Humanichs. CBS, however, has remained tight-lipped on its possible cancellation or renewal.

According to Bustle, there is still hope for the series to be picked up for a third season. Since "Extant's" second installment was not announced until October of last year, the website posits that CBS is simply waiting to reveal the renewal next month. The fact that the show boasted a star-studded line up like Berry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Grace Gummer is also a plus factor, as the network will reportedly want them to "remain on its docket."

CBS has already ended the four-year run of its other science fiction series "Under the Dome." Cancelling another show will supposedly leave "some serious space open" in its lineup of summer offerings. Bustle believes that booting "Extant" at this point will not be to the network's advantage.

As for Cartermatt, the website believes that Berry's show may not return for season 3. Its rating during the season finale is purportedly not exactly high enough, only drawing a 0.7 average in the 18–49 demographic. With production cost getting expensive, especially with a Hollywood A-lister as the lead, renewing the sci-fi series will not be a lucrative move for CBS.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, show creator Mickey Fisher and executive producer Elizabeth Kruger have refused to comment on the possibility of season 3. The pair instead decided to talk instead about the plot shifts that viewers witnessed all throughout the last installment.

According to Fisher, they ended the season "in a way that goes along the original aim." He said that Molly's final speech has propelled the show in a phase where they could explore "how that world changes and how [people] adapt and survive together." Does this mean they have already conceptualize what they are planning to do for the next season? The creator chose not to elaborate.

In answering the website's trick question as to whether fans will be seeing Lucy in season 3, Kruger gave a vague answer.

"We never say never! We love her, too. We had such a great time creating that character. She proceeded to exceed our expectations."
