Facebook 2018 update: Monetization option now available for game streamers

Facebook announced the launch of Gaming Creator Program which will allow game streamers to get monetized by means of tips from viewers.

In a press release published on Jan. 27, Facebook announced that it will be providing a monetization option for game streamers. Facebook is hoping to take part in the successful game industry by providing game streamers a means to earn. It aims to connect the gamer community with game creators in order to create a "creator-first ecosystem." Facebook will be a new competition to Twitch and YouTube — the two major social media platforms by which game streamers live stream their games.

According to the press release, the Gaming Creator Program is focused on "Helping gaming creators build more meaningful and more engaged communities on Facebook than anywhere else." Since Facebook is a huge social media platform with other social networking service connections, the program will allow creators to increase their audience size and distribute to other platforms like Instagram and Oculus. The program also aims to support game creators, allowing them to earn while doing what they love best — streaming games. Furthermore, the program also focuses on helping creators build a platform that will allow creators at all levels succeed. Gamers who are interested in trying the program may sign up in the link included in the press release to apply.

The monetization option Facebook has launched will allow viewers leave tips for creators. According to TechCrunch, tips will start at $3. Details on revenue sharing for the monetization option has not been discussed at the moment.

As a tool to help creators, in addition to the monetization option, Facebook is also enabling creators to live stream in 1080p/60fps, ensuring the quality of the videos.

Once the pilot program succeeds, Facebook will move in the direction that the feedback of viewers and creators alike on the initial program will point to.
