"Fallout 4" presents players with numerous companions that bring their own unique abilities to the table.

Some "Fallout 4" companions have abilities that are best suited for exploring, while some are just good folks to have around while traveling through the Commonwealth Wasteland.

Still, not all companions are created equal, and for the purposes of combat, some allies are more useful than others.

One companion that can be useful in battle early on in the game and even until the late stages is Preston Garvey.

Players will first run into Garvey at the Museum of Freedom inside Concord, and armed with his trusty laser musket, he can really provide some needed firepower on the battlefield.

Garvey also has the United We Stand perk that grants players the ability to deal 20 percent more damage as well as 20 more points added to damage resistance whenever they are in the presence of three or more foes, according to GameSpot.

In order to unlock Garvey's unique perk, "Fallout 4" players will need to make generous decisions while also contributing significantly to the settlement-building efforts taking place across the Commonwealth.

Robert MacCready is another option for "Fallout 4" players looking for battle-ready companions.

MacCready is a hired gun, and players can acquire his services by paying him 250 caps when they encounter him inside the Third Rail bar in Goodneighbor.

MacCready's unique perk is known as the Killshot, and with this, players will be given a 20 percent boost to their headshot accuracy whenever they use VATS.

In order to unlock MacCready's unique perk, players must make evil decisions inside the game to improve their affinity with him, according to Game Rant. Players must also complete MacCready's personal quest, Long Road Ahead, in order to unlock the Killshot perk.

For "Fallout 4" players looking for a more bruising companion, they may want to select Strong as their ally.

Players will first find Strong inside a cage located in the Trinity Tower. By finishing the Curtain Call quest that takes place in the Trinity Tower and then freeing Strong from the cage, he will then become an available companion.

Strong's unique perk is Berserk, and this grants players an additional 20 points of melee damage whenever their health drops below 25 percent.

In order to unlock Strong's unique perk, "Fallout 4" players will need to avoid making and using mods while he is around, while also taking care to make generous decisions.

Armed with more knowledge regarding some of the companions inside "Fallout 4," players will soon be able to find the battlefield ally that is right for them.
