'Fallout 4' Pip-Boy Edition update: Not all smartphones fit inside wearable device

Bethesda Blog

For fans of the "Fallout" series, the upcoming fourth installment is a long time in the making, and publisher Bethesda is making sure that "Fallout 4" is a title to remember. Aside from the promised new and updated content, Bethesda is releasing a Special Edition for the title that includes a real-life Pip-Boy.

Targeted for the hardcore "Fallout" fan, the Pip-Boy will be a working replica of the machine featured in the "Fallout" series. The Pip-Boy can hold the player's phone, allowing the player to run the "Fallout 4" companion app as the game progresses.

However, there is a small catch to the special edition item – not all smartphones would fit on the device.

According to a post on the official Bethesda blog, the biggest smartphone that the special edition item can accommodate is the Samsung Galaxy S5. There would also be custom foam inserts that can be adjusted to fit other smartphones like the iPhone 6, the iPhone 5 and 5s, the iPhone 4 and 4S, and the Samsung Galaxy 4.

Since Bethesda already laid out some of the smartphones that can be used together with the Pip-Boy, fans can expect that other smartphones having the same dimensions as those on the list can also be used with the bundled device. However, phones larger than the Galaxy S5 such as the iPhone 6 Plus would not be able to fit into the Pip-Boy.

"In addition, using the customizable foam insert you should be able to fit most other popular smartphone devices. As we wanted to stay faithful to the dimensions of the in-game model, any smartphones larger than the models listed will not fit inside the wearable device," the post states. "For these larger devices, our Pip-Boy companion app will still be available."

The Pip-Boy is included in the "Fallout 4" Special Edition, with the upcoming title set to be released on Nov. 10.
