Popular post-apocalyptic role-playing game "Fallout 4" was free at the start of February, which allowed gamers curious about the "Fallout" franchise to give it a try for free and spend the entire weekend at the start of the month roaming around the wastelands and the commonwealth.

The free trial was the perfect time for unsure but interested people to check out various aspects of the game ranging from controls to combat to non-playable character (NPC) companions. "Fallout" games – similar to Bethesda's Elder Scroll games – have always been overflowing with content, and "Fallout 4" is no different and offers hundreds upon hundreds of hours of game time.

Video Game Company Bethesda posted the announcement on their official website on Jan. 25. The announcement read: "Forget dieting, or exercise, or any number of New Year's resolutions you might have made. Instead, focus on the only one that matters: having more fun. And what is more fun than playing a game – for free! From now through January 28, Xbox One players with Xbox Live Gold can try Fallout 4 for free. PC players will get their chance at the same deal from February 1 through February 4. If you choose to purchase anything you play during the Free Weekend, your save data will carry over."

The game was free to Xbox One and PC gamers, with Xbox Live Gold members getting the trial a few days earlier than the rest of the world. Aside from that, Bethesda went on to announce, that people who purchased the game during the free trial weekend would get up to 50 percent off on certain game add-ons. The game itself would also go on sale for 33 percent off with a handful of additional content, and the game-of-the-year edition going on sale for 40 percent off.

Similar to the previous games "Fallout 4" takes place after a nuclear apocalypse. Players are thrown in the shoes of the sole survivor of vault 111. After awakening from cryogenic sleep, the player sets off to find their spouse and child, but there are bad things lurking in the wastelands and the player's child has been taken by an ominous group known only as The Institute.

The game is currently available for purchase on the Steam store.
