'Fallout' news: Bethesda announces 'Fallout Anthology' - details

Although much of the focus in this year's Quakecon event was on Bethesda's announcements regarding the upcoming "Fallout 4" title, fans were surprised with an additional confirmation by the big-name publisher and developer – a compendium release is also on the way.

The "Fallout Anthology" is a collection of all the previous titles released under the series, which features five "Fallout" titles: the original "Fallout"; "Fallout 2"; "Fallout Tactics"; the "Fallout 3 Game of The Year Edition"; and "Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition." The two latter titles will come packed with all the DLCs and expansions released for the respective games.

The "Fallout Anthology" collection, however, doesn't come with the bells and whistles fans expect for a compendium package. Instead of coming with a manual, art books, or other collectible kits like some bundles do, "Fallout Anthology" will only come with disc sleeves with the DVDs for each game. The simplicity of the collection is also why Bethesda gets away with a $50 price tag per set for the whole collection.

Although the package seems simple enough, Bethesda made sure that fans will come to appreciate the compendium. The "Fallout Anthology" title will be given out with a nice touch of the post-apocalyptic franchise's humor – the compilation will be encased in a collectible Fat Boy mini-nuke case, with the bomb case itself wired with audible bomb sounds. The case is also built big enough in anticipatation of the release of the next "Fallout," so that players can add "Fallout 4" to the collection once it becomes available.

The compilation is set to be released on Sept. 29 in North America and on Oct. 2 in Europe. A bit of a setback, though – Bethesda's Pete Hines recently tweeted that "Fallout Anthology" will come out as a collector's release, so only a limited number of sets will only be shipped out.
