"Far Cry 5" will not be coming to store shelves until Feb. 27, 2018, but it is already causing controversy and anger among gamers. Ubisoft released the first images but outraged ensued as some interpreted one particular image as a jab against America's red state.

Depicted in this image is a family dressed in red, white and blue, as well as military camouflage. The family sat at a picnic table that had the American flag.

The image took inspirations from The Last Supper for its concept. Only, the family in the photo is a cult and its members are violent white American extremists from Montana. They are the villains of "Far Cry 5."

While some praised the concept as well-thought satire, others were offended that "Far Cry 5" featured white supremacists to "make white people look evil." They saw this as an attack against Christianity or politics in the red state.

It bears noting that previous releases of this action-survival video game series also featured white male shooters. The difference in the older games was that the shooting happened in some exotic place and the victims were indigenous people. Ironically, there was no uproar about this back then, and people patronized the games despite the violent theme.

The controversy drove some fans to petition Ubisoft to cancel the game's release or at least change the game villains and add African-Americans or Mexicans in the cult group. In response, Ubisoft released an updated image of the poster with one African-American member. 

Meanwhile, players of "Far Cry 5" will assume the role of the Sheriff's deputy in Hope County in the gameplay. The objective will be to protect the locals and contain the activities of the doomsday cult headed by The Father, Joseph Seed, of The Project in Eden's Gate.

"Far Cry 5" will be released for PlayStation 4 (PS4), Xbox One and PC, with some bonus content for PS4 gamers. It will not be out on Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, check out the first teaser below.
