Ferrari is heading into electric car territory now and even challenged Tesla in racing for the record of producing the first electric supercar.

The supercar company is aiming to finish it before Tesla does in order to claim the title of the world's first electric supercar. It seems that Ferrari is also positioning itself in direct contest with Tesla, as its CEO Sergio Marchionne also downplayed the work of Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk in the electric car market.

Ferrari boldly stated that it could surpass Tesla's Roadster 2.0, which could reportedly achieve an acceleration of 60 miles per hour in just 1.9 seconds and a range of 620 miles. Marchionne claimed, "If there is an electric supercar to be built, then Ferrari will be the first. People are amazed at what Tesla did with a supercar: I'm not trying to minimise what Elon did but I think it's doable by all of us."

This could be easier said than done by Ferrari since Tesla is set to release its Roadster 2.0 sometime around 2020, which means that Ferrari would have to do double time and rush their own electric supercar by next year or at least early 2020. Whether or not he and his company can beat Tesla to an electric supercar remains to be seen.

Earlier in 2016, it can be recalled that Marchionne was one of the first skeptics regarding the electric supercar and was even on the fence about its practicability and performance. Now, it appears the CEO believes that the time is ripe for a shift in technology for automobiles, hence his statements and goal to beat Tesla at its own game.

Marchionne even predicts that by 2025, electric cars could be more dominant than diesel-driven ones, which gives a lot of car manufacturers less than 10 years to adjust to the rapid changes in automobile tech.

Rest assured, Marchionne has stated that their electric Ferrari cars could come soon and that it would definitely be easy for them.
