E3 2018 is just days away and gaming enthusiasts are wondering if we might finally see something of the long-awaited remake of Final Fantasy VII.

Excitement has been building ever since the role-playing game was revealed at Sony's PlayStation conference back at the E3 conference in 2015.

But there have been some stumbling blocks in the development of the title after it was moved from the Japanese studio CyberConnect2 over to Square Enix.

According to NDTV, Japan-based game developer Dan Tsukasa alleged in a Reddit thread that the game was moved to Square Enix because CyberConnect2 were not making good progress.

"The announcement that Square was taking the game away from CyberConnect2, they didn't take it away and continue it, they started it again because CyberConnect2's work was just so useless and not far enough along, but still far enough along that remaking it was faster than refactoring it... (it wasn't in a good state at all)," he claimed.

When it was originally announced, the title was confirmed only for the PS4 and nothing else but Xbox One owners were given some hope that the remake would be making its way out to the Xbox console too after it was apparently made available for pre-order at Walmart Canada.  According to ResetEra, the remake had also been listed as available for pre-order on the Spanish page of the GAME retailer website, although that listing appears to have been taken off the site now.

As NDTV notes, the release would be an interesting addition to the Xbox lineup as the original Final Fantasy VII game was never released to Microsoft consoles.

Now with E3 just around the corner, Final Fantasy fans are wondering if the game will make a surprise appearance at E3 during the Microsoft or Square Enix sessions.

The title has yet to be given a release date so it's possible we may be getting an update on that front at E3, which starts in Los Angeles on June 12.

With that in mind, Final Fantasy VII fans might want to tune into the Microsoft E3 2018 conference on Sunday, June 10 at 1pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm BST (and 6am AET on June 11).

Then there is the Square Enix E3 Showcase 2018 on Monday June 11 at 10am PST /1pm EST / 6pm BST / 7pm CEST, where we might hear more about the project.
