Floyd Mayweather next fight 2016 rumors: Gennady Golovkin lines himself up to fight champ

Gennady Golovkin is headed into an important match this Sunday when he faces David Lemieux in a quest to unify the middleweight division titles, of which the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title is the only missing piece around his waist.

Will he be successful? Well, if he can put up another stellar show and knock off Lemieux, then it could happen.

He is a favorite but right now, the Canadian champion is not about to serve to him on a silver platter. In fact, he believes that he holds the secret to handing Triple G the first loss of his career.

That, of course, remains to be seen.

Moving forward and assuming he does get over Lemieux, what's next?

A fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. sounds good, but the thing is the American is retired. However, the Kazakh destroyer simply refuses to believe that Mayweather has walked away from boxing and that he would eventually step back into the ring.

He seems pretty sure about it that he has even offered himself as a possible opponent. But will Mayweather even care? Right now, it doesn't seem likely unless Triple G can come up with something enticing that will gain Mayweather's interest.

Seeing as well that Mayweather has been picking the opponents he feels he has an edge over, it is unlikely that the 49–0 fighter would even want to get in the ring with Golovkin. The last thing he would want is to get hurt, and seeing the damage that Triple G can cause, Mayweather would likely avoid someone like Golovkin (even if he is not officially retired).

That thought remains up in the air, but the thing is it would be best for Golovkin to focus on his match with Lemieux. His opponent is someone who should not be taken for granted, and the last thing he needs is to incur a loss pretty much in the same way that Lucas Matthysse had when he was seemingly overwhelmed about a possible 2016 fight with Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.
