Floyd Mayweather vs. Andre Berto fight 2015 news: Deal not confirmed yet

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has started training for his September 12 fight but there is still no word on who he intends to face. Word is that the leading candidate is Andre Berto, the same fighter whom he mentioned as a potential opponent together with Karim Mayfield.

If true, then Mayweather may be looking for an easy fight just to equalize Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0. But will he retire? Analysts, critics and experts doubt it.

For one if it would indeed be Berto (30-3, 23 KOs), the fight may likely be not on pay-per-view. Rather, it could be free and will be carried by CBS, the mother company of Showtime.

No offense to Berto, but he doesn't exactly qualify in the 'solid opponent' term that Mayweather used when he was asked on what fans should expect for his supposed last fight.

Many feel that Amir Khan would be a better opponent but even the British Southpaw seems to have resigned to the fact that Berto has gotten the nod through his Twitter account.

Regardless of what people think, Berto feels that he is up to the task and is reportedly up to the challenge. The camps of both fighters have already been in talks though nothing has been made official.

Just the same, the camp of Mayweather is still exploring other possibilities just in case negotiations bog down. But seeing that Mayweather is bound to get his demands, the deal will likely materialize unless something dramatic happens.

Mayweather is an 80:1 favorite over Berto if the fight does push through.

Until Mayweather makes the official announcement, this alleged matchup remains up in the air.

A Mayweather-Berto match will come as a big surprise to many and will most likely garner heavy criticism especially if Mayweather holds true to his promise of this being his last fight.

But then again, he can break his promise in the same way that he said he wanted to face a quality fighter for his last opponent… again, no offense to Berto.
