'The Following' season 4 news: Series to be picked up by Hulu?

Fans of "The Following" are not yet giving up hope on a fourth season for the Kevin Bacon starrer. Last month, the series was cancelled by FOX after a three-season run, with its May 18 two-hour episode appearing to be the last.

According to TVLine, low ratings were to blame for the show's cancellation. Although the thriller series started off strong with more than 10 million viewers — which somehow remained consistent during its first season — the numbers steadily declined during the second and third seasons, dropping down to 3 million viewers per episode, making the show the lowest-rated Monday night television show.

There has been speculation that season 4 might get picked up by Hulu, which carries previous seasons of the FOX thriller, but Deadline reported that this could be a "long shot" for the series.

It isn't uncommon for shows to be shopped around to different networks in the event of a cancellation. Some have been more successful than others in doing so, as with the case of "Longmire," which was cancelled by A&E last August after three seasons on the air but was picked up by Netflix for a fourth season three months later. "The Mindy Project" was also cancelled by FOX earlier this year, but was picked up by Hulu in a matter of weeks. While those two shows found life in new homes, other shows such as NBC's "Constantine" were not as lucky. Despite a huge following and an intense fan-driven campaign on social media to bring the show back, the supernatural series failed to get picked up, and was confirmed to be done earlier this month.

Meanwhile, "The Following's" official social media accounts continue to be inundated by fans' requests to bring back the show. On the show's Facebook page, there were rumors that "The Following" was going to continue in 2016 as a Netflix original, but actor Shawn Ashmore debunked the rumor, simply tweeting "No!" when a fan asked him if it was true. So far, there has been no word of a renewal for the show on any other network or streaming service as of the moment.
