'Forza Motorsport 6: Apex' PC release date update: Announced for Windows PC, to launch this spring for free

Windows gamers will finally get a chance to race and chase in "Forza Motorsport 6." Microsoft has announced the launch of the "Forza Motorsport 6: Apex," a "curated" version of the popular racing game coming to PC players for free.

Turn 10 Studios head Dan Greenawalt takes pride in their bold decision to give away the game to Windows players. "We are a first-party team. That gives us great opportunities and cool challenges. Why is it free? Because we can," he said via Venture Beat.

Although the game is for gratis, "Forza Motorsport 6: Apex" is big on everything, enough for players to consider it a steal. The game runs with the latest Windows 10 could offer, including DirectX 12 applications programming interface (API) and 4K or Ultra HD resolution.

The game will boast a total of 20 tracks peppered in six locations including famous racing tracks like Spa-Francorchamps and Dunsfold. In each one, there will be special career modes to try including the Showcase Tour, which is narrated by former "Top Gear" hosts James May and Richard Hammond.

There will be 63 cars to choose from, all of which players can drive, crash and smash up. DLC will be released over time to expand the game's content, which means that more cars and tracks will arrive on "Forza Motorsport 6: Apex."

Hard work pays off in the game as much as excellence in racing. Participating and winning races help players unlock new stuff like race events. Apart from hitting the road and circling the lap first, Microsoft is proud of "Forza Motorsport 6: Apex" for the storytelling it presents to players.

"This is our opportunity to craft a new experience with a very specific intention of welcoming a new group of gamers into the Forza franchise," design director Andy Beaudoin said. "We've added new gameplay mechanics and race modes that make it more approachable for a new audience," he added.

"Forza Motorsport 6: Apex" will be available to download on Windows this spring. Players will only use their keyboard, mouse or gamepads to race.
