'Frozen 2' release date, plot update: rivalry between Elsa and Anna for the crown?

Disney

"Frozen" has been hailed as one of the most successful animated films of all time, shattering the $1 billion box office record for an animated feature when it was released back in 2013. A sequel has been confirmed and according to a few new rumors it is possible that it will see its two main characters competing for the crown.

According to Headline and Global News, it is rumored that "Frozen 2" will see Anna (Kristen Bell) and Queen Elsa (Idina Menzel) fighting for the crown of Arendelle. This sparks from a joke that actress Idina Menzel stated during an interview with E! Online. Menzel joked that Elsa might die early in the film and could be pushed off a cliff.

"We are at story writing and they're working on it and I think I'm in it," Menzel had joked at the time. "That's all I know - unless maybe Elsa falls off an ice cliff and she dies in the first five minutes."

While the statement was meant to be taken light-heartedly it has sparked rumors of what the plot for "Frozen 2" might be. Fans have since speculated that Anna herself could be responsible for killing Elsa as they compete to become the rightful ruler.

In a report from Parent Herald, this theory is further supported by another rumor suggesting Elsa and Anna are not really sisters and that one of the girls could have been adopted. This would corroborate with a popular fan theory suggesting they are also sisters with Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), the main character in "Tangled."

Should the rumor prove true then it is possible that Anna is the true heir to the throne and Elsa might not be immediately willing to relinquish her power to her sister, especially if it turns out she is being manipulated by the movie's real villain which is rumored to be a sorceress or witch that has power over fire.

No official release date for "Frozen 2" has yet been announced.
