Fans have known since last year that Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen won't be reprising their shared role as Michelle Tanner on "Fuller House."

The twins played the singular role on "Full House." While many have been disappointed about their choice not to be on the show, some fans have also been confused about what really happened because there have been conflicting reports about Netflix's efforts to get in touch with the sisters regarding the show.

When the revival series was first announced, Mary-Kate and Ashley were reportedly surprised and claimed that no one told them about it, with Mary-Kate reportedly saying that she was "shocked" that co-star John Stamos never reached out to them.

Stamos recently told Howard Stern on his radio show that he was told that the Olsens have been asked to return to show. The actor went on to say that he called Mary-Kate, who told him that they wouldn't have done the upcoming series anyway.

"They decided not to [be on the show], which I respect," Stamos told Stern (via Jezebel), adding that the sisters were "very sweet" and very enthusiastic about the show.

"They were just afraid of acting. They don't consider themselves actresses," Stamos added.

Since appearing on "Full House," the twins went on to build an empire based on their brand, which includes TV, film, video projects and merchandise. At a young age, they joined the ranks of the wealthiest women in the industry. Mary-Kate's last credit was in 2011's "Beastly," while Ashley had an uncredited role in the 2010 film "I'm Still Here."

Nowadays, the 29-year-old sisters are busy with their highly successful fashion lines, couture line The Row and a contemporary collection called Elizabeth and James.

Right now, it is the twin's younger sister, Elizabeth, 26, who is taking Hollywood by storm. The actress has a contract with Marvel as Scarlet Witch. Her performance in the indie film "Martha Marcy May Marlene" gained a lot of praise from critics.

Meanwhile, Stamos also revealed to Stern that executive producer Jeff Franklin reached out to Elizabeth to see if she wanted to take on the role on the show.

"I didn't do it, I think Jeff Franklin did," said Stamos. "I said, 'Call the sister [Elizabeth]. Ask her.' We talked to her agent and her agent was like, 'Come on, she's not doing that.'"

"Fuller House" premieres on Feb. 26 on Netflix.
