As fans eagerly await the last two books of the saga "A Song of Ice and Fire," author George R.R. Martin is reportedly working on a new science-fiction series for HBO titled "Captain Cosmos."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is set in 1949, the era when home television began, and focuses on a young science-fiction writer who attempts to work on projects that no one dares to write.

The show is reportedly still in its early stages of development, with Martin still working out a deal with HBO. The pilot episode is being written by Michael Cassutt, whose previous endeavors include writing credits and executive producer for "Z Nation."

Because the show is still in its earliest stages, there has been no announcement regarding its casting, number of episodes, running time or scope of production. HBO has not yet given any announcement confirming that the series will be picked up for a full season.

"Captain Cosmos" does bring to mind Martin's previous work as he had been a writer for the 1986 anthology "The Twilight Zone" and the 1995 series "The Outer Limits." Both projects were heavily influenced by science fiction of the 1940s to the 1960s.

The report also points out that the show will not be a major commitment for Martin as he had already announced on his blogsite that he will be avoiding public conventions and meetings to finish writing "The Winds of Winter," the sixth book in "A Song of Ice and Fire" of which the "Game of Thrones" TV series is based on.

According to his blog post on "Not a Blog," Martin is hoping to finish "The Winds of Winter" prior to the end of the year. Despite this, producers of "Game of Thrones" have confirmed in earlier interviews, as cited by THR, that the show will overtake the events in the books and will eventually spoil the ending.
