There are two more novels left in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, and fans are eagerly awaiting the next title's release. The author has previously shared in his official blog that he has turned down public appearances — including an appearance at the "Game of Thrones" Comic-Con panel this year — so he can focus on "The Winds of Winter." Although there is still no official word when the series' sixth book will be published, Martin recently revealed his plans for the ending of the books, and it's not as grim as people may think. 

Since the author is known for killing off favorite characters, fans are worried that the books will get even darker as it gets near the end. But he said that he doesn't plan on ending his series with total annihilation. 

Speaking to the New York Observer, Martin said, "I've said before that the tone of the ending that I'm going for is bittersweet."

The author, who is a fan of the "Lord of the Rings" series, said that he is looking to J.R.R. Tolkien's books for inspiration. 

"I mean, it's no secret that Tolkien has been a huge influence on me, and I love the way he ended 'Lord of the Rings.' It ends with victory, but it's a bittersweet victory," said Martin. 

As for "The Winds of Winter," the author previously told Entertainment Weekly that he wants to finish the book before season 6 of "Game of Thrones" premieres next year. Aside from cutting back on public appearances, he has also bowed out of writing episodes for the upcoming sixth season of the HBO series. 

"Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish, but I canceled two convention appearances, I'm turning down a lot more interviews — anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done," he told EW.
